1971 Westfalia
Affectionately named ‘the Seahag’ this 1971 Westfalia was one of Ian’s first restorations. She was bought by longtime special forces veteran Trapper in 1971 and fueled many surf trips to Baja with him and his friends. Trapper beamed with pride when he told us stories about his drives and trips. In one of his stories, he said sometimes, they would break down in the middle of the baja desert. One of the guys in the group would ride to the nearest town for a part, while the rest would get busy tearing down the engine. Doing a top end rebuild in the desert seems tough, but then again Trapper was a tough dude.
Expertises
The restoration began with a complete removal of the interior and the westfalia cabinetry was set aside for later refurbishing. The lower nose and front doglegs were very rusted out, and were replaced. Then after more bodywork, the bus was painted in the Seafoam green she bears today. The broken tattered interior wood paneling was removed and the inside was also painted. Baltic birch was used to do the interior paneling.
